Iran will join the 2026 World Cup but is demanding FIFA guarantees, such as visas for players and staff with IRGC ties, sparking warnings from U.S. officials.

Iran has confirmed it will take part in the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, but has asked for a series of guarantees from FIFA to ensure the team's participation.
According to BBC, the demands come after FFIRI president Mehdi Taj was denied entry to Canada before the FIFA Congress last month.
The Iranian federation has submitted ten conditions to FIFA, including a guarantee that all players, coaches and officials, including those who have served in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), will receive visas.
The demands also include respect for the Iranian national flag and anthem, as well as heightened security measures at airports, hotels and stadiums during the tournament.
Iranian footballers would be welcomed at the tournament, while individuals with IRGC ties could still face restrictions entering the United States.
Rubio's statement shows an open stance toward the Iranian team, but warns that links to the IRGC could bring state-imposed restrictions for some individuals.
FIFA faces a delicate challenge, balancing the need for participation of all qualified teams with the political realities between Tehran and Washington. Some of the other demands of the Iranian federation may be difficult to implement in practice, and Iranian officials have asked journalists to avoid questions beyond the issues.
