Kosovo Police confirmed that at 03:45 a.m. on May 8, 2026, its patrols spotted a strong fire in the parking lot of the “AutoServis Katund i Ri” service center, which is located on the main road linking Peja with the surrounding villages.
The Mayor of Peja, Mr. Ilir Gashi, said at a press conference:
We are relieved that no lives were lost in this tragedy. We thank the fire‑fighting teams for their swift response and professionalism. We will continue to work closely with the authorities to uncover the cause of the fire and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The front part of the service building, consisting of two floors with metal doors and large windows, was engulfed in flames and suffered considerable damage.
Some internal equipment of the service, including a hydraulic pump, a load lifter and several spare parts, were destroyed or heavily damaged by the fire.
The fire‑fighting units, consisting of 12 firefighters, two Mack fire trucks and an Eurocopter EC135 helicopter, arrived on site within 5‑10 minutes of the alert.
Firefighters used a high‑pressure water spray system (1,200 liters per minute) and foam to extinguish the flames, while the K9 teams searched for any traces of flammable substances.
Due to the incident, the main road linking Katund i Ri with Peja was closed for the entire day, causing significant congestion on alternative routes.
Public transport authorities announced that the “R 12” bus line would be suspended for at least two hours, while taxi and freight drivers were urged to use detour routes.
The Mayor of Peja emphasized the importance of cooperation with authorities to prevent similar incidents in the future.
