Albanian doctor in Germany, Erlind Kadriu, a specialist in cardiology and invasive medicine, has raised concerns about the cardiovascular health situation in Kosovo, emphasizing the large differences that exist between Kosovo and Western European countries regarding treatment and medical check‑ups.
In an interview on the program Diaspora on Klan Kosovo, discussing his professional experience in Germany, Kadriu said that one of the things that worries him most is the much younger age of patients in Kosovo who face serious heart problems.
“The age of patients in Kosovo is unfortunately younger than in Western Europe. In Germany we treat patients over 80 or 90 years old, whereas in Kosovo the situation is completely different. Even the statistics show that this gap exists,” he told Klankosova.tv.
He also spoke about the culture of neglecting symptoms and the fear people have of medical examinations\"
“In Kosovo people go to the doctor only when there is no other option. There is a popular saying ‘you only go to the hospital when you have a coffin’, and this is very wrong. Here in Germany people undergo regular check‑ups and have a preventive‑care culture,” the cardiologist said.
According to him, citizens should at least once a year undergo basic tests such as blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure and other basic parameters to prevent heart disease.
